Our face: its expressions help us communicate with the world. But as we age, wrinkles can get in the way, affecting our self-confidence, personal relationships and professional lives, says Dr. Joseph Muccini of Mid-America Skin Health & Vitality Center. “We equate our wrinkles with what makes us look old to other people.”

Through his medical, surgical and cosmetic dermatology practice on the St. Luke’s Hospital campus in Chesterfield, Muccini is helping patients wage the so-called war on wrinkles by looking at the bigger picture. “We talk a lot about the face, but we really need to look at both the head and neck.” In addition to wrinkles on the face and neck, doctors and patients are battling skin damage in its texture, tone, radiance and color. Everyone wants to maintain that smooth texture, tight tone, bright radiance and uniform pigment, Muccini says.

To maintain this kind of youthful glow, he notes prevention is the best defense. Muccini advises every woman to have at least four products in her prevention arsenal: a gentle cleanser, a morning Vitamin C serum, a UVA/UVB sunscreen with at least 50 SPF and a night-time retinoid. He adds that an ounce of sunscreen should be applied 20 minutes before going outside and reapplied every two hours.

However, once the skin damage is done, Muccini likens his practice to an entire toolbox that can provide fixes for specific projects. “It is really a question of trying to match a therapy to what is bothering someone. You need to have different tools; and with them, you can take a much more nuanced approach to a person’s problem.”

On the skin surface level, his practice offers minimally invasive procedures such as microdermabrasion and chemical peels. To address deeper issues, he can provide various options, including fillers, Botox or similar products. Additionally, cutting-edge laser and ultrasound treatments from Pearl Laser and Pearl Fractional Laser to Ulthera Ultrasonic Skin Tightening are offered. There also are various treatments specifically for the neck, such as Botox to correct the vertical lines in the platysma muscle. The results range from diminished wrinkles to smoother, brighter, tighter, younger-looking skin.

“The beauty of these treatments is they are associated with no down-time, or much-diminished down-time,” Muccini notes. “We can do multiple treatments more than once because you heal faster, and the risk is much, much lower than in the past.” Results typically last from three to nine months for the injectable therapies, and may last much longer for some of the more dramatic applied energy treatments such as laser. After the initial procedure, patients often return on a pre-scheduled basis for maintenance, Muccini says.

And while he is in the business of skin therapy, Muccini says he never pushes any procedures onto patients. “I try to have a very honest conversation about whether or not I can make them happy, and if any of our treatments can fit into their concerns and anxieties.” Because when patients are happy with the results, it boosts their self-confidence, he says, and that, in turn, makes him happy.
