The key to beautiful makeup application starts with foundation that makes your skin glow. We caught up with Sephora PRO artist Sheranda Curtis to get her tips on making your natural beauty shine. A licensed cosmetologist representing Sephora nationally, she has more than 15 years of experience in hair, makeup and wardrobe styling.
LN: What are some tips for getting a healthy summer glow?
SC: Beauty begins with healthy skin. A gorgeous bronzed glow is undoubtedly the hottest accessory for summer. To get that glow, be sure to exfoliate your skin with a gentle exfoliator, which will remove any skin impurities and dry patches. Next, apply a hydrating moisturizer, which will nourish the skin and allow for smooth and even self-tanning application. Then, apply an easy-to-use self-tanner like the Sephora Tinted Self-Tanning Body Mist, which is a streak-free bronzing mist that will give you a gorgeous, natural-looking tan effect. For an added touch of radiance, apply a luminizer to cheekbones and décolletage.
LN: How do you create flawless skin?
SC: To create a flawless complexion, you must prep and prime the skin before applying any color products. I love to use the Clarisonic Mia2 Skin Cleansing System on a daily basis, which cleanses and removes any impurities. Then, apply a lightweight moisturizer, followed by a primer to even out the complexion. Finally, apply your foundation and color products for a natural flush of even color.
LN: Should you use a different type of foundation in the summer?
SC: Just like with our clothes, it is important to update our beauty routine for each season, especially when it comes to foundation. During the spring and summer months, it is best to apply oil-free or matte formulas to ensure long-lasting wear through the humid and hot weather. During the fall and winter when the air is more arid, skin tends to dry and flake so you should invest in a creamier formula.
LN: Do you have any tips for matching your foundation to your complexion?
SC: When matching foundations, it is important to take into consideration both your skin undertones and surface tones. The undertone is the underlying color of your skin, which is either neutral, warm (yellow) or cool (blue). You can determine your undertone by gently pressing your thumb into the skin of the wrist, then observing whether the veins turn green (warm undertone) or bluish (cool). Surface tones are superficial skin colorations caused by reactions to different stimuli (weather, allergies, etc). Match your foundation with your undertone and when in doubt, choose one with a soft, yellow undertone, which is the most universally flattering. It’s also important to always balance the tone of your face to décolletage.
LN: How would you determine if you need a different color for the summer?
SC: For the summer, your surface tones usually change as the weather changes. Some may become tan, others may get flushed more easily. Usually in the summer, our clients go one to two shades darker to match their evolving surface skin color.
LN: What do women often overlook regarding skincare?
SC: Often women overlook the importance of providing the skin with a regimented, daily skincare routine. In order to see results, it is important that you apply your skincare products every day. It’s also really important that everyone integrates some sort of SPF into their skincare to keep skin looking youthful.
