Straight hair is so last season—or is it? And this autumn is all about bold lips…or should they be neutral? To make sure your hair and makeup stay as on-trend as possible, we talked to five beauty professionals to find out what’s hot for fall.

Shaudi Habibi, Dominic Michael

A bang-up job. “Bangs are really big right now,” Habibi says. “The type of bang is dependent on your face shape, but it’s a trend a lot of people can get into because it’s not dependent on changing your hair length.”

Going up. “The high bun is moving to low with a lot of backcombing,” she says. “We’re doing a throwback to the 40s and 50s—deep side parts, really nice smooth waves.”

Whitney Rhoads, Breeze Blow Dry Bar

Master the mess. “There is a return to a very retro feel in hair and makeup, and it is a little undone,” Rhoads says. “It’s taking looks we may have done traditionally—whether it’s a ponytail or curls or an updo—and having it have that retro feel. But what’s modern is that it’s a little undone, a little messier.”

The new curl. Rhoads explains that a sleek-to-a-curl look is quite popular, where the roots are sleek and the tight curls begin around the ear. “It’s modern glamour.”

Imperfect perfection. “The color for makeup this season, like the hair, is a little undone,” she says. “Antique purple is replacing that really heavy black, dark smokey eye.”

Kathleen Fuller, Four Seasons Hotel St. Louis Spa & Salon

Return from dye. “A lot of people are coming in, wanting to go back to their natural color,” Fuller says. “They’re taking their color back to their roots.”

Sleek and shiny. “They’re really going for that straight, sleek look,” says Fuller, recommending the Global Keratin taming system process, which seals the hair cuticle and provides ample shine for six months.

Mighty makeup. Fuller notes two bold beauty looks for the season: “They’re doing a real power lip and a natural eye. On the reverse, there’s almost a nude lip and a lot of purple and grey on the eyes with black eyeliner.”

Angi Mayo, Ginger Bay

Hidden hues. “We’re starting to see less traditional highlights and more color melting, peek-a-boos, color glossing—highlights that aren’t coming straight out of the scalp. People want more longevity out of their color,” says Mayo.

Creative color. Mayo says people are now being more adventurous with their color, using shades like blue or purple in small streaks. If a brightly-colored strand is too much for your taste, “chose a classic color all over, but use a more intense version of that color on the tips.”

Jordan Fox, Blown Away Blow Dry Bar

Lay low. “We are seeing a lot of different looks for fall. One is nice and simple: the low pony. You can go messy with tousled waves, or very sleek and parted with straight ends.”

Pucker up. “For lips, we are seeing very, very matte lips. No sheer, no shiny, just a nice, velvety lip,” says Fox, adding that lip colors have moved into the berry color palette this season.

Beautiful brows. This face-framing can’t be forgotten. “Full brows are in,” Fox says. “Tell everyone to stop tweezing and plucking!”
