AT AGE 24, DIANA AND HER HUSBAND, THE PRINCE OF WALES, were the
guests of President Ronald Reagan and his wife, Nancy, at the White
House, along with several Hollywood A-listers. At the event, the
princess famously danced with actor John Travolta, and the midnight
blue velvet, off-the-shoulder gown she was wearing that evening
became known as the ‘Travolta Dress.’

DIANA PREMIERE STEEL MAGNOLIAS
DESIGNER CATHERINE WALKER, who created gowns for Diana for
almost 16 years, recognized that the princess was photographed from
every angle, so therefore needed to consider the detail on both the
front and the back of her gowns. A dark burgundy dress with a long
tailcoat is intricately embroidered with gold thread and
pearls.

IN 1997, MAUREEN DUNKEL WAS LOOKING for an important textile
collection for investment purposes. In the spring of 1997, a
well-assembled collection of Diana’s dresses was scheduled to be
auctioned at Christie’s. She purchased 13 and later purchased
another. Dunkel has since auctioned off four and will have five of
her 10 dresses on display at the America’s Center Convention
Complex.
