On Trend: Going Tribal

August is always a tricky month for fashion: Summer styles are on their way out, while fall fashion is just starting to trickle in. We’re ready to move on from neon but it’s still sweltering hot so we can’t imagine heavy fabrics. That’s why the tribal/ethnic/safari look is so perfect for this time of year. The colors are totally fall, but the styles still lend themselves to hot days and evening outdoor soirees. Plus, you can easily wear these pieces into the cooler months with your chunky cardigan and tall boots!

Everybody's Wearing

On my last trip to New York, I was perusing the fabulous accessories at Henri Bendel and stumbled upon a case of hundreds of charmed bangles. Looking them over, I quickly realized I had seen these layered on celebs like Sandra Bullock and Christi Turlington. Alex and Ani has created quite the collection of bracelets, and that’s just what the idea is: to collect them. I’m partial to the initial charms, but they have bangles for every theme: animals, birthstones, charities, zodiac signs, saints/religious symbols—you name it, they probably have it. There also are embellished styles that add a pop of color and personality to the mix. And even better, they are made using eco-friendly, recycled materials right here in the U.S.A. I also love their expandable design—a completely original technology that replaces traditional clasps with a sliding mechanism, making each piece adjustable. And at about $25 a piece, it’s super-easy to throw a bunch on for the ultimate arm party.

Must Have: Men’s Watches

I have always loved the look of a woman wearing a men’s watch (think Jennifer Aniston). And turns out, most watch designers aren’t designing specifically for men or women anymore because of this. Here are a few of the top designs that could work for you or your significant other.

Fashion with a Conscience

Clutches are the ‘it’ bag right now—they can be big enough for all of your daytime essentials but still look chic at a party. I spotted the cutest version of these at Laurie Solet the other day. Each one was a different size and made from a different pattern. Come to find out, they are designed by one of Laurie’s salesgirls, Sarah Riley. Lucky Penny Couture was created to be an eco-minded line for the modern girl. “My inspiration for the brand was fostered by my love of the fashion industry and the environment—two things that don’t often go hand in hand,” says Riley. Lucky Penny strives to utilize textiles that have had a previous life, balancing them alongside beautiful, organic or sustainable fabrics and intricate, hand-embellished details. This means each bag is only one of several produced and truly unique.

Play All Day

One would think the most elegant of sports would require elegant attire, but when Hannah Griswold and Yesim Philip went looking for chic, sophisticated apparel to wear on the tennis courts, they were unimpressed. So they took matters into their own hands, creating a high-fashion, high-function, luxury tennis collection with inspirations from 1920s tennis star Suzanne Lenglen and iconic designer Azzedine Alaïa. “Our motto is ‘play all day’ and we wanted to design a collection that reflects that,” Griswold says. And that’s the beauty of these pieces: You can easily and stylishly go from the court, to lunch, to picking up the kids.

Plus One

If you haven’t been in to The Limited lately, you might be surprised to see that the store has undergone quite the update. A few weeks ago, the Galleria location re-opened with a whole new look—and more specifically a whole new store within the store, Eloquii. Eloquii is The Limited’s new plus-size clothing line, offering sizes 14 and up, and is one of only six stores in the country. Eloquii addresses the traditionally-underserved plus-size customer, who currently comprises more than 50 percent of the American market. The line truly is spot-on with the trends (I’m loving the tweed and leather jacket— leather is huge for fall), showing that you don’t have to be a size 2 to look chic!
