Signature Kitchen & Bath: Vision Accomplished

When helping a client redesign any room in their home, the most important thing a designer can do is to listen, James Cline says. The VP of retail sales and marketing at Signature Kitchen & Bath says the entire process is built around helping clients realize the vision that might already be in their heads. “If we ask enough of the right questions and listen, we can pull that information from the customer and create exactly what they want for their home,” he says.

Signature Kitchen & Bath recently opened its third location on Manchester Road in Rock Hill, providing full-service design for kitchens and baths. Offering major national brands, along with its own Signature line of cabinetry, the process allows homeowners the option of ‘buying local,’ Cline notes. “By having that manufacturing capability, with an 80,000-square-foot facility in St. Charles, it provides a unique opportunity to support our neighbors.” He notes that all of the lines carried at the shop are customizable. “You don’t have to take cookie-cutter cabinets. These are designed for your space.”

The showroom also includes partner brands, California Closets and Elite Stone & Marble. California Closets was acquired by parent company Lami Wood Products Corp. approximately a year ago, and the growth has been exciting, Cline says. “We offer complete organizational services, including walk-in closets, pantries, laundry rooms or home garages, even the home office,” he notes, adding that while St. Louis is typically traditional in a design sense, California Closets is an international company that incorporates contemporary influences. “If you’re from St. Louis and you like contemporary, you can find yourself challenged. It’s not to say that we don’t have traditional pieces, as well, but those contemporary pieces are available.”

During the design consultation process, clients also are presented with a 3-D artistic rendering of their project. This can be a great benefit in helping clients really visualize and take control of their redesign, Cline notes. “Some folks can look at white paper with boxes drawn on it and that’s all they need, but I’m not one of those people,” he says. “I like to be able to see what it’s going to look like when it’s done.”

Signature Kitchen & Bath also has strategic partnerships with a variety of suppliers, along with additional locations in Manchester and St. Charles. “We carry a lot of samples in the store, but in some cases, there are literally thousands of products,” Cline says. Through its partnerships, designers and their clients can see all of those samples to get the perfect materials for their design.

“If I had to use one word to describe the experience, it would be ‘alignment,’ ” Cline sums up. “It’s about truly asking the right questions, listening and then making sure we’re in alignment with our customers—from the perspectives of aesthetics, functionality and accessibility. We let them set the tone and accomplish what they want to get accomplished.”
