The Ladue News Show House assembles a dream team of St. Louis designers, incorporating decades of design expertise, creativity and personality. Over the next few weeks, we’re going to chat with them and get a bit of inside scoop on their favorite people, things and insider secrets.

LN: When do you get your best ideas?

KT: When I’m driving— and I drive a LOT!

LN: Who is your favorite design icon?

KT: Barbara Barry (1)

LN: What’s on your nightstand?

KT: A brushed stainless lamp, a book I’m reading with my youngest daughter and my iPhone.

LN: What regions of the world influence your style?

KT: The California central coast, Singapore (2), Portland and Southern England (3).

LN: Pick a city where you would choose to design your dream project.

KT: San Francisco, definitely! I used to live there, and when the marine fog rolls in every morning, it really influences your colors!

LN: What’s the best fabric ever?

KT: Sunbrella’s fabrics (4) are kid-and food-friendly, soft, easy to care for, and available at a reasonable price.

LN: Do you have a favorite design icon?

CK: Dorothy Draper (1) and Charlotte Moss (2)

LK: Who are your role models?

CK: Jamie Lee Curtis (3), Maxine Clark and Michelle Obama.

LN: What’s on your nightstand?

CK: On my nightstand—and flowing on to the floor next to my bed—are trade publications, magazines, books, a cup of Earl Grey tea (4) and several pairs of reading glasses.

LN: Does any particular place in the world influence your style?

CK: I’ve traveled in Japan, England and Mexico. I loved striking out on my own to discover the treasures of each country.

LN: What’s the most difficult color to work with?

CK: White—it’s boring.

LN: Have a best-ever fabric?

CK: The pleated fabric on the sofa pillows in the living room at the Show House. It’s fabulous!

LN: Is there one element (furniture, accessory, fabric, color) you think transcends fads?

VD: I always love a beautiful chandelier (1).

LN: Who is your all-time favorite design icon?

VD: Tricia Guild (2)

LN: What’s on your nightstand?

VD: A stack of books to read.

LN: Any particular region of the world influence your style?

VD: I lean towards a mix of English and French. I love ’40s French.

LN: What’s the most difficult color to work with?

VD: I call it the ‘m’ word—mauve. LN: What’s the best fabric ever?

VD: Toile
