When it comes to both decorating and entertaining, designer Bunny Williams is the epitome of classic, old-school style. Here, Williams offers advice setting up a classic drinks table, evocative of a slower, gentler, more gracious era.

“In whatever room you use the most--your living room, family room or library--I suggest having a bar that can be freely used. Growing up in the South, where entertaining was constant (people even dropped by unannounced), I learned to be ready. My great-aunt Berta had the most wonderful American pine corner cupboard in her living room. During the day, the doors were closed, but about five o’clock in the evening, the doors would be opened. Inside were shelves with glasses of various sizes and a complete supply of sodas, fruit juices and an assortment of liquors; a silver ice bucket and a pitcher of water were brought in, and she was ready to receive guests. We all felt comfortable helping ourselves. Mahogany three-tiered trolleys make great bars. The top can gold a tray with glasses and an ice bucket, and lower shelves can hold cans of sodas, juices and bottles of water. Narrow cabinets are also perfect for a drinks area with storage in the bottom cupboards.”
