Have you ever wondered about the history of the monumental limestone buildings near Lindell and Grand boulevards, including what is now the Saint Louis University Museum of Art and The Scottish Rite Cathedral and Theater? Did you know that the area around Grand and Lindell was once the hub of St. Louis society or that five media outlets now call the Grand Center district home? These are just a few of the interesting tidbits to be gleaned from the Grand Center Architecture Walking tour, which resumes Saturday, Sept. 1 at 10 a.m. and promises to provide a fascinating look into the district’s magnificent buildings, rich history and vibrant arts culture. The 1.5-mile tour will take walkers on a journey back in time, supported by a richly detailed narrated history, filled with facts about sights dating to 1855, when city limits were expanded to include Grand Boulevard.

The architectural tour is organized and sponsored by the Grand Center Inc., a nonprofit established to oversee the growth and development of the district, which is home to more than 30 of St. Louis’ most important institutions dedicated to the arts and culture, public media and education, all within a four-block area. The district hosts more than 1,500 cultural events annually at locations such as the Fox Theatre, Powell Hall, Sheldon Concert Hall, Jazz at the Bistro and the Contemporary Art Museum, and is a destination for more than 1.5 million people who visit each year. To sign up for a tour, contact Grand Center’s Marcia Quint, marcia@grandcenter.org or 289-1583.
