It was another busy month with a new Missouri women’s amateur champion crowned and one of the area’s finest recognized for her performances over the years. Let’s get to it:

MISSOURI WOMEN’S GOLF ASSOCIATION’S AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

Catherine Dolan of Ballwin is the 2011 MWGA Amateur Champion, receiving the individual silver trophy and traveling club trophy for her overall score of 219 at Bellerive Country Club. Dolan, a senior at Missouri State, fired her second consecutive one-under-par 71 to come from behind and post a two-stroke victory over Kayla Eckelkamp, who shot 67 in the final round. Dolan, with her mother, Ann, caddying for her, entered the final round trailing defending champion Ellen Port by three strokes, but took control early, getting to as much as three under for the day while Port was on her way to a final-round 78. Dolan shot 77-71- 71—219 for the 54-hole championship, two better than Eckelkamp and four ahead of Port. “It’s pretty big to win this tournament,” Dolan says. “It’s nice to know I can play against the best in the state.”

ELLEN PORT HONORED

After the Missouri Women’s Amateur Championship, the 2011 Bernice Edlund Award was presented to Ellen Port. The award has been presented annually since 1952 to an MWGA member who has promoted the aims of the association and set an ideal standard of conduct and sportsmanship. “I give thanks everyday for the blessings I have received from golf,” Port says. “I am so lucky to have had the support of my family and my Lord to play this game that I love.”

MARQUETTE JUNIORS IN FLORIDA

Marquette’s Zachary Gollwitzer and Kiersten Kuc were among 43 juniors from across the nation to recently attend a Captains’ Clinic from some of the legends of the game, including past U.S. Ryder Cup Captains Billy Casper, Dow Finsterwald and Hal Sutton during the Ryder Cup Junior Academy at the PGA Center for Golf Learning and Performance in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Kuc, of Chesterfield, and Gollwitzer, of Ballwin, were chosen by the local Gateway PGA Section to attend after writing essays in a contest. One boy and one girl were selected from each PGA Section nationwide.

METROPOLITAN OPEN

Shawn Jasper has made it two in a row: The Missouri graduate won the sixth Metropolitan Open Championship on the Lewis & Clark Course at the Country Club of St. Albans. Skip Berkmeyer finished in a tie for third to earn the Low Amateur award for the second consecutive year. The 2006 Open champion has finished in the top 5 in four of the six Open Championships.

ST. LOUIS DISTRICT GOLF ASSOCIATION CHAMPIONSHIP

Alex Cusumano captured the St. Louis District Golf Association championship at Winghaven Country Club. The seventh-seeded Cusumano defeated top-seeded Ted Moloney in 19 holes to earn the title. “Winning this tournament was a great accomplishment for me,” says Cusumano, a sophomore at Loyola of Chicago. “The summer as a whole has been successful. I have had many great rounds and the entire summer was a huge step going into my second year at Loyola.”

WINNING LONG DRIVE

Len Marks smacked the longest drive in a Brentmoor Retirement Communities-Ruth Park Golf Course Senior League round. Marks, an Olivette resident, sent his tee shot on No. 7 about 40 yards short of the green, some 350 yards from the men’s tee box.

METROPOLITAN JUNIOR AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

David Abolt (Metropolitan/Gateway PGA Junior Golf Club) won the 12th Metropolitan Junior Amateur title at Clinton Hill Golf Club. In the 14- to15-year-old age division, Jimmy Siegfried (Old Warson County Club) claimed the runner-up position with a 152 total. In the 12- to 13-year-old age division, Frankie Thomas (Meadowbrook Country Club) won the division title with rounds of 77-73 for a 150 total.
