A wide range of affordable and accessible arts institutions make St. Louis culturally rich. We asked the leaders of several arts institutions to share their ‘second’ favorite cultural diversion.

Robert Archibald, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, MISSOURI HISTORY MUSEUM

My favorite? Saint Louis Art Museum: It’s a world-class institution that hasn’t lost touch with the local community, offering events and educational activities for all ages. Anywhere else in the country, you would pay at least $10 per person for museum admission. Our art museum is free, which says a lot about its desire to make it accessible to all.

Dwyer Brown, INTERIM DIRECTOR, CONTEMPORARY ART MUSEUM ST. LOUIS (CAM)

As a fan and supporter of contemporary art, I would say White Flag Projects is one of my favorite visual arts organizations in St. Louis. We as a city are so fortunate to have two distinct spaces, CAM and White Flag Projects—both noncollecting institutions with missions promoting only contemporary art in their galleries. White Flag’s Matt Strauss and his staff effectively utilize their smaller, more flexible space to showcase some of the most significant work being produced today.

Tim O’Leary, GENERAL DIRECTOR, OPERA THEATRE OF SAINT LOUIS

The St. Louis Symphony—the quality of that orchestra is spectacular. I’ll never forget attending a concert when I was contemplating my move from New York City to St. Louis. I was blown away and deeply moved by the beauty of their playing. Since then, I have had many moments in Powell Hall when I have felt absolutely transported—moments when you just feel lucky to be alive, to live in a world where such sounds are possible. That’s what art is all about, and that’s why the St. Louis Symphony is so world-famous.

Paul Reuter, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, THE SHELDON CONCERT HALL

I enjoy and greatly admire the work of the St. Louis Symphony. The quality of the symphony’s performances, adventuresome programming and community service are all at a very high level. Music director David Robertson, concertmaster David Halen and the members of the orchestra are amazing musicians and collaborative artists. It is a pleasure to know them as individuals and to hear them make music, both in the full orchestra and in chamber ensembles. St. Louis is blessed to have such a great orchestra!

Michael Uthoff, ARTISTIC AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, DANCE ST. LOUIS

My passion is going to the movies, and I enjoy watching them at the Hi Pointe movie house. It is like walking back into my days as a kid attending Sunday matinees.

Steven Woolf ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, THE REPERTORY THEATRE OF ST. LOUIS

I find the treasures of the Saint Louis Art Museum fascinating and worth contemplating. The collection doesn’t overwhelm the viewer, and there are always new discoveries to be made there.
