The old cliche about the third time being the charm turned out to be right for Skip Berkmeyer. The 37- year-old finally succeeded in his third attempt to win the Missouri Amateur Championship at Boone Valley Golf Club in Augusta.

“This is my favorite tournament of the year,” Berkmeyer says. “It feels good to win it, it really does.”

Berkmeyer won the granddaddy of all the state golf tournaments with a 3 and 2 victory over Justin Bryant, a De Smet grad who will be a senior at Wake Forest this fall.

U.S. SENIOR OPEN QUALIFYING

Sunset Hills Country Club was the host for the 2011 U.S. Senior Open Qualifying, and Columbia’s Jeff Whitfield shot the only subpar round to earn the lone spot available. Whitfield’s 3-under par 69 was 4 shots better than the rest of the field and he will play in his first U.S. Senior Open at Inverness Country Club in Toledo, Ohio, later this month.

MAGA WOMEN’S AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

Shwete Galande played the final round of the 19th Metropolitan Women’s Amateur in 1-under par and finished at 145 to earn a 5-shot victory in her first Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association’s Women’s Amateur. Galande, a native of India, will be a junior at University of Missouri—St. Louis in the fall.

Missouri State University golfer Catherine Dolan, a Parkway West alum, finished second after rounds of 76-74.

JUNIOR GIRLS GOLF

Caroline Rouse achieved a goal she was reaching for this summer: getting her name engraved on the Missouri Women’s Golf Association’s trophy.

Rouse, who just graduated from MICDS and will attend Yale this fall, won the 51st Junior Championship that was held recently at Norwood Hills Country Club. Rouse shot 156 to win the tournament by two strokes over Jordan Chael, of Overland Park, Kan.

FOUR-STATE TEAM TOURNAMENT

Missouri’s reign at the Junior Girls Four State Championship ended at the Beatrice Country Club in Beatrice, Neb. Missouri’s team has dominated in recent years, winning five titles in the last six years, but it was not to be this time, as Missouri ran into a powerful Nebraska team.
