Could there be a more appropriate first date for a pair of dyed-in-the-wool St. Louisans than attending a baseball game and cheering for their beloved Cardinals? Regardless of the score, things certainly turned out well for Caley Barnhart and Jack Lawlor.
Caley and Jack grew up in the same circles and have been acquainted since high school. In college (Saint Louis University and the University of Dayton, respectively), their small world became larger; but after graduation, they were drawn back together. Her best friend and his cousin, who were dating, saw potential in the pairing, and arranged that initial Busch Stadium rendezvous in March 2011. Obviously, sparks flew.
After several happy months, Jack, who is a financial adviser with Edward Jones, was transferred to Indiana. Undaunted, the two decided to maintain their relationship long-distance; and the following year, Caley landed a position at the Indianapolis office of PricewaterhouseCoopers.
It was during a trip back to the Gateway City that Jack took Caley to a romantic dinner at Vin de Set, where he popped the question. And that wasn't the only surprise he had planned. After she accepted, the pair headed to Molly Darcy’s pub, where, much to Caley's delight, family and friends were waiting to congratulate them.
Planning a wedding remotely posed some challenges, but the couple never doubted that it should be held in their hometown. Caley wanted to keep the day simple and laid-back, with a focus on loved ones. Her bridesmaids included sisters (hers and his), plus her cousins and longtime friends. For the ceremony, she chose her childhood parish of Ste. Genevieve du Bois, with Fr. Mark Mackenzie of St. Matthew the Apostle officiating.
After Jack kissed his bride, Ode to Joy made for a triumphant recessional. And at the reception, Caley was overjoyed to see everyone enjoying themselves on the dance floor—including her 90-year-old grandfather.
As Caley and Jack shared their final dance, guests showered them with confetti. Then it was off to a honeymoon at Ladera Resort on St. Lucia, where they unwound by lounging on the beach.
The newlyweds live in Indianapolis, but it’s pretty obvious where their hearts are.
