Opening to the grand foyer, the terrace and the solarium, the living room offers fabulous flow for family living or entertaining, but designer C.J. Knapp explains that multiple openings can present a challenge. “You have to think about a family walking through, but you also have to have seating and room for entertaining. It’s important for the room to be functional, as well as gorgeous.”

Knapp and designer Carol Snyder agree that the most impressive parts of this very impressive space were the decorative frieze on the ceiling and the magnificent, imposing fireplace. “That kind of craftsmanship just transports you back to another time,” Snyder says. “And with a wall of French doors, the expansive room has a bucolic connection to the outdoors.” There are screens on the doors, she adds, so the doors can all be opened to welcome a summer breeze.

Knapp and Snyder used luxurious but livable fabrics—silk, leather and velvet—to create a space that is comfortably gracious. “Silk at the windows is always an elegant choice,” Knapp explains. “We chose leather, velvet and cotton blends for the furniture. They’re all comfortable, and they can be treated so they’re easy to clean, too. Nobody wants a room you can’t sit in!”

A 1946 Steinway baby grand sits proudly in the corner, just tempting family and guests to gather ‘round. “The room just had to have a vintage piano,” Snyder says, “And the acoustics in the living room are fantastic!”
