Cupcakes make it easier than ever to satisfy a sweet tooth. Perfectly sized for one--or two, if you're feeling generous--each cupcake bite is an experience to be savored. Lucky for us, there seems to be a never-ending supply--and selection--thanks to cupcake connoisseurs who have elevated the formerly ho-hum children's birthday party staple to a whole new level.

Jilly's Cupcake Bar

With multiple wins on Food Network's Cupcake Wars and its cupcakes consistently appearing on a variety of 'Best Of' lists around town, Jilly's has become one of the premier cupcake purveyors in town. The bakery offers special monthly flavors, holiday-specific cupcake creations and also mini-cupcake 12-packs. You can even get your treats delivered! According to 'head cupcake' Jill Segal, the Turtle Cheesecake cupcake, filled with dolce de leche caramel, is her current favorite. jillyscupcakebar.com

The Sweet Divine

What started out as a hobby for Jenna and Jason Siebert has become quite the culinary enterprise. First came The Sweet Divine food truck, where they began selling their delicious cupcakes and other baked goods. The mobile business became so popular that they started up a storefront operation, which recently moved to new digs in Soulard. The duo also has made a couple of appearances on Food Network's Cupcake Wars, ultimately winning the Angry Birds challenge. Check out the best-selling Drunken Pig, featuring Newcastle ale and bacon! thesweetdivine.com

The Cup

Touted as the area's "first gourmet cupcake bakery" in 2007, The Cup started out in the CWE and now has locations in Illinois and Tennessee, as well as another Missouri shop in Springfield. The menu is chock full of seasonal specials, featured flavors that rotate every four weeks and classics served daily, like the Red Velvet with cream cheese frosting topped with red velvet crumbles. cravethecup.com

Pint Size Bakery & Coffee

Chef/owner Christy Augustin has plenty of culinary chops--she graduated from Florida Culinary Institute and worked in some of the best kitchens in New Orleans before moving back to St. Louis, where she was pastry chef at King Louie's and Sidney Street Cafe. As much as possible, she uses organic ingredients, free-range farm eggs and unbleached flours in her creations. She says the best-seller is the Double Vanilla, which has real vanilla bean in the cake and the icing. pintsizebakery.com

Sarah's Cake Shop

This Chesterfield favorite has been baking up goodness for six years. Three years ago, Sarah's Cake Stop rolled out as one of the first food trucks around town. Sarah's offers five standard cupcake flavors all the time, plus daily specials. At the top of the popularity list--the Snack Cake, a high-end version of the old Hostess classic featuring vanilla cream frosting and dipped in ganache. sarah'scakeshopstl

SweetArt

Part art gallery, part bakery, this neighborhood bakeshop has a focus on old-school goodness and the best ingredients available. No artificial flavors or high-fructose corn syrup here. Instead, SweetArt uses as many organic ingredients as possible so customers only have to think about how delicious their treats are, not what's in them. On Tuesdays, the bakery has a 'Cupcake Happy Hour' from 4 to 6 p.m, so you can try a bunch for next to nothing. We've been told the Sweet Potato Pie cupcake is to die for! sweetartstl.com
