Camp is over. It’s too early to shop for back to school, or is it? Either way, it’s the perfect time to squeeze in a movie. Here’s what’s on tap in August…

August 7

G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra

Brace yourselves. This is not the G.I. Joe we grew up with. It is not the action figure that protects U.S. oil interests overseas. Here G.I. Joe is an elite military force traveling across the globe to stop a corrupt arms dealer, which begs the question: Why are they even calling it G.I. Joe? In any event, get ready to be blown out of your seat in this ultimate summer action flick.

Julie & Julia

A neurotic woman suffering an early mid-life crisis hatches a crazy plan. She decides to cook every recipe in Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking. Personally, I found that book pretentious, condescending and overbearing, but Julie drinks a lot of vodka, and Meryl Streep is playing the legendary chef, so who knows?

Shorts

This is the family pick for the month. An unpopular little boy living in a Stepford-esque neighborhood finds an unusual rock in his yard one day and soon discovers it has the power to grant the wish of whoever holds it.

August 14

Bandslam

This would be the teen/tweeny choice in August. A high school misfit bonds with his class’ popular girl over their love of music. Together they assemble a misfit band and try to win the annual Bandslam competition. Think School of Rock meets…Well, think School of Rock six to eight years later.

District 9

Are you a sci-fi fan? District 9 tells the story of a fictional future world where aliens are refugees in South Africa. Wait, where was I? I dozed off there for a second.

The Final Destination 3D

…because three movies about a group of madcap teens who cheat death only to discover death is after them just wasn’t enough.

The Goods: Live Hard Sell Hard

This is the summer comedy from the Talladega Nights peeps. Jeremy Piven steps up as the smoothest snake oil…er used car salesman on the planet, brought into a struggling dealership for a huge 4th of July sales event.

August 21

Inglourious Basterds

Despite getting mixed reviews at Cannes, the world waits with bated breath for the first collaboration between Quentin Tarantino and Brad Pitt. This fledgling effort is about a bunch of disgraced soldiers who avoid execution in World War II by helping the Allies fight the Nazis.

Post Grad

Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants star Alexis Bledel steps into the spotlight in this coming-of-age tale about a young woman whose rose-colored image of what life after college would be is shattered when she can’t find a job and is forced to move in with her eccentric family.

August 28

H2: Halloween 2

…and why not?
