Autumn is right around the corner, and this September seems to be more about thrills than Oscars. In fact, the entire fall movie season seems surprisingly light—and surprisingly scary. Maybe Hollywood is reacting to our need to escape a dismal economy? This is the autumn of the thriller, and I, for one, couldn’t be happier.

APOLLO 18 (Sept. 2)

This ‘mockumentary’ thriller centers around the premise that, decades after the fact, footage is discovered of a secret mission to the moon, Apollo 18. The astronauts never returned and the footage explains why the United States never again tried to send a manned spacecraft to the moon. Think Paranormal Activity in space.

SHARK NIGHT (Sept. 2)

If you paid for a ticket for Piranha 3D, you have only yourself to blame for what will no doubt be an endless stream of sea creatures attacking topheavy sorority girls in 3D. Or electric eels attacking bridesmaids in 3D, octopuses attacking flight attendants in 3D…with no end in sight. This time, it’s lake sharks attacking college kids in 3D.

THE APPARITION (Sept. 9)

A young couple (played by Harry Potter’s Tom Felton and Twilight’s Ashley Greene) is haunted by a supernatural presence that is unleashed during a scientific experiment.

CONTAGION (Sept. 9)

Steven Soderbergh has assembled a cast that reads like a guest list to an Oscar party for his latest thriller. A team of doctors is assembled to combat a deadly virus that could kill billions. It stars Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Marion Cotillard, Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow.

PIRANHA 3DD (Sept. 16)

I told you. And no, that’s not a typo. There are two D’s.

ABDUCTION (Sept. 23)

‘Twihards’ shudder with anticipation at Taylor Lautner’s first breakout role. Forget the fact that the plot premise is from a Lifetime movie: Lautner plays a young man who tries to uncover the truth about his life after he finds his baby picture on a missing children’s website.

MONEYBALL (Sept. 23)

If you’re ready for a break from all the thrills and chills, here it is. Brad Pitt plays Oakland A’s manager Billy Beane, and the film follows his method of creating a championship team on a budget. Pitt was hoping for Oscar buzz for his respectable performance in Tree of Life, but this might be his real shot at a statue.

KILLER ELITE (Sept. 23)

Jason Statham, Clive Owen and Robert De Niro star as top-shelf assassins trying to take each other out. There’s a slight problem, however. Clive Owen plays the bad guy and he may very well be impossible to hate.

DREAM HOUSE (Sept. 30)

Here, we have a psychological thriller with Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz as a couple who, shortly after purchasing their dream home, discover that brutal crimes have taken place there.

WHAT’S YOUR NUMBER? (Sept. 30)

At last, a romantic comedy: Anna Faris stars as a single woman who fears that she has become too promiscuous. As a result, she decides she must have already slept with Mr. Right and returns to her old beaus to see who she may have overlooked. Meanwhile, her gorgeous, womanizing neighbor (Chris Evans) helps out. Bet you can’t guess how that one turns out.
