FRIDAY, JAN. 6
DE SMET AT CBC, 7 P.M.—This is one of those days you throw the record out and watch two talented teams tussle with one another. Coming off the Meramec Holiday Festival, both teams will be eyeing a good start to the New Year in the Metro Catholic Conference. CBC is the young up-and-comer, while De Smet is trying to lay claim to the league title.
HOCKEY MICDS VS. JOHN BURROUGHS AT AFFTON RINK, 8 P.M.— Rivals collide on ice. MICDS pounded Burroughs 6-0 the last time they played as Charles Combs went off for 5 goals. But anything can happen on any given night. The Affton Rink is one of the best venues for prep hockey in town.
SATURDAY, JAN. 7
VIANNEY VS. BREESE CENTRAL AT THE HIGHLAND HIGH SCHOOL, 4:30 P.M.—This one will take you on a bit of a road trip but it’ll so be worth it. This is one of the featured games at the Highland Optimist Shootout, one of the area’s top collection of basketball teams from either side of the Mississippi River. This matchup is particularly delightful in that Vianney is among the heavy hitters in Missouri this season while Breese Central is a tiny, yet mighty Illinois program that is traditionally strong.
EDWARDSVILLE VS. EUREKA AT CBC, 1 P.M.—This is the opening game of the Prepcasts.com Shootout, the premier girls showcase in the area, and it’s a doozy. Under coach Lori Blade, Edwardsville is among the most dominant programs on the Metro-East side. Eureka brings standout Alex Hillyer, who has been averaging 24 points, 10 rebounds and over 5 blocks per game.
ROCK BRIDGE VS. KIRKWOOD AT CBC, 4:15 P.M.— Rock Bridge last won a state title in 2008 but returns a team bent on returning to the state semifinals after losing in the district title game a year ago. Kirkwood brings point guard and Mizzou recruit Lianna Doty, along with teammates Dajae Williams and Natalie Fryear. The Pioneers lost to eventual state champ Incarnate Word last year in the sectionals. This could be the best matchup of the day.
WORD VS. LAFAYETTE AT CBC, 5:45 P.M.—A rematch from the Visitation Christmas Tournament semifinals. The defending state champion, Incarnate Word is led by Purdue recruit Taylor Manuel, who’s averaging 18 points and 10 rebounds per game. The Lancers, among the best in a stout Suburban West, boast a roster that includes Jordynn Martin (16 points per game) and Kayla Hall (9 points per game).
OZARK VS. ST. JOSEPH’S ACADEMY AT CBC, 7:15 P.M.—The headliner of the Prepcasts.com Shootout, Ozark makes the trip up to take on perennial power St. Joe. The Angels, fresh off their deep run into the Visitation Christmas Tournament, have been on a mission this season as they’ve piled up victories week after week.
MONDAY, JAN. 8
ST. MARY’S AT JOHN F. KENNEDY, 6:45 P.M.—This is your chance to get an eyeful of one of the best prep point guards in town. St. Mary’s standout senior guard Jon Connelly leads the Dragons into an AAA game against Kennedy. Connelly, a four-year varsity starter, is averaging nearly 24 points per game. He’s hitting more than 47-percent of his 3-pointers, and he’s missed just four free throws all year. He’s always worth the price of admission.
NERINX HALL AT VISITATION, 6:30 P.M.—This will be the third time these teams have met this season, and there’s no telling what might happen. The first time the Markers and Vivettes met at Nerinx Hall’s tournament, the hosts ran away with the game. When they tussled again at the Visitation Christmas Tournament,Viz turned the tables and pulled up an upset victory.
