Girls want to have more than fun. They want to learn how to play golf, and now they have a terrific program in West County that will allow that to happen.

West County has been selected as a site for LPGA-USGA Girls Golf, a nationwide developmental golf program that encourages girls ages 7 to 17 to learn to play the game, build friendships and sample competition in a supportive and positive learning environment. The West County program is one of more than 130 sites around the U. S.

Maria Palozola, an LPGA member and a top area golf instructor, will serve as the site director. LPGA-USGA Girls Golf of West County is a part of the national LPGA-USGA Girls Golf program, which is the largest developmental golf program in the nation exclusively for girls.

The instructional clinics will be held on the following Tuesdays: May 31, June 7, June 21, July 12, July 26 and Aug. 9. Each session runs from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Big Bend Golf Center. For more information, call 440-9082 or visit stlouiswomensgolfacademy.com.

Accelerated Golf Tour

Collegiate and advanced high school golfers will be offered expanded opportunities to measure their golfing skill against top competitors this summer.

The Accelerated Golf Tour (AGT) consists of a series of 10 golf tournaments administered by Carol Fromuth, who is the director of the Gateway PGA Section’s junior program, where she conducts more than 100 tournaments a year. She also coaches the St. Joseph’s Academy Angels.

The AGT is scheduled to launch in June, and tournaments will continue into August at the following venues: Norwood Hills Country Club, Dalhousie Golf Club, Bogey Hills Country Club, The Missouri Bluffs Golf Club, Far Oaks Golf Club, Old Hickory Golf Club, Gateway National Golf Links, Aberdeen Golf Club, Whitmoor Country Club and Crown Point Golf Club.

The fee is $150 per event, and it includes golf, lunch and range balls both days, and a tee gift. For more information, visit acceleratedgolftour.org.

College golf

Missouri State’s Catherine Dolan recently was named Missouri Valley Conference Golfer of the Week after earning medalist honors at the Rio Verde Invitational in Rio Verde, Ariz.

The junior from Ballwin picked up her first collegiate victory after firing 73-74-71—218, 2-over par, on the White Wing Course at the Rio Verde Country Club. She posted a four-shot victory over a field of 90 players to grab the Valley’s weekly honor for the third time in her career. “It feels great,” said Dolan, a Parkway West grad. “I’ve never won a college tournament so it’s really exciting. I can go on to other tournaments and know I can do well.”

Dolan is a two-time all-conference performer. She is planning on playing in the Accelerated Golf Tour this summer.
