Justin Bryant did it again. The defending Metropolitan Match Play champion beat Skip Berkmeyer for the second consecutive year. At the recent event held at Old Warson Country Club, Bryant stopped Berkmeyer, 5 & 3. With the two all square, Bryant won No. 8 and 9 with pars to lead 2-up going into the last nine holes. A par on No. 10 gave Bryant a 3-up advantage. A birdie from the right rough on No. 11 gave the Wake Forest senior and De Smet grad a 4-up lead. It ended on No. 15 when Berkmeyer conceded Bryant’s birdie bid.

The victory puts Bryant in some exclusive company: He joins Don Bliss, Jim Holtgrieve and Berkmeyer as mutiple-time champions of the Match Play Championship. Loyola of Chicago sophomore and Westminster grad Alex Cusumano was recently selected as the Ramblers’ Male Athlete of the Month. Cusumano was a key figure in the Loyola men’s golf team’s first-ever Horizon League Championship title and NCAA Regional berth. A first-team All-Horizon League selection, the left-hander posted a 74.3 stroke average over 12 rounds in April. For the season, Cusumano owns a team-best 75.1 average in 27 rounds and has recorded five top-10 finishes. Next, he’ll try to help his team in the postseason. Loyola will travel to Norman, Okla., to compete in the NCAA Regional.

LOCAL GOLFERS ON THE PRO TOURS

Chesterfield’s Chris Naegel won the recent eGolf Tour’s Oldfield Open. Naegel had four birdies and an eagle in the final round of the tourney to claim victory at Oldfield Country Club in Okatie, S.C. The 29-year-old Naegel finished with a 4-underpar 68 to take home the $25,000 firstplace prize. With a multitude of putts to play with, courtesy of his four-shot lead, Naegel three-putted the 72nd green for a closing bogey and a four-day total of 13-under 273, and his first professional title.
