The terrific golf season continues into the fall for Illinois senior Scott Langley, who’s been selected to the U.S. team that will compete at the 2010 World Amateur Team Championships. The 21-year-old Langley is ranked 10th in the latest World Amateur Golf Rankings. USA World Amateur team captain Fred Ridley named Langley, a Parkway South grad, along with recently crowned U.S. Amateur champion Peter Uihlein of Oklahoma State and runner-up David Chung of Stanford to the squad, which will compete for the Dwight Eisenhower Trophy Oct. 28 to 31 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

  ELLEN PORT WINS TWICE

Lucky seven is a good number for Ellen Port. The St. Louis amateur standout won the 72nd Missouri Women’s Amateur Champ ionship for a record-tying seventh time. The course at Lake Forest was 5,911 yards with a par of 72. Katrina Choate was the runner-up. Going into the third round, Port was tied with last year’s runner-up, Alisha Matthews of St. Louis. Matthews’ birdie on the first hole gave her a quick lead, but a triple bogey led to a four-stroke deficit at the turn. Port kept her cool in the 98-degree weather, making mostly pars on the back with one birdie and one bogey to finish one over for the day and six over for the championship. Matthews came in third, sharing medalist honors with Port for a two-day total of 149.

Port’s other big win this summer came in the 18th Metropolitan Women’s Amateur Championship at Forest Park Golf Course. Port shot rounds of 71-74 for a 145 total. Kristen Hamel was second with a 155.

ST. LOUIS WOMEN'S DISTRICT GOLF ASSOCIATION

The St. Louis Women’s District Golf Association held its 88th Invitational Championship at Westborough Country Club. Barbara Berkmeyer of Norwood Country Club defeated Cynthia Rank of Old Warson Country Club, 1 up on the 36th hole. In the A Flight, Pattie Canter of Glen Echo defeated Ann Scott of St. Louis. In the B Flight, Sue Petru of The Country Club of the Legends defeated Bev Schnurbusch of St. Albans. In the C Flight, Tracey Rhea of Algonquin defeated Julie Ford of St. Albans.

  MID-AMATEUR

Skip Berkmeyer, Ty Comerford and Scott Hovis all shot Even par 70 at Westwood Country Club to earn spots in the 2010 U.S. Mid-Amateur at Atlantic Golf Club in Bridgehampton, N.Y. Four other golfers played for the final qualifying spot and two alternate positions. Packard Dewitt (Tennessee), Scott Horton (St. Louis), Dan Emrick (St. Peters) and Scott Kirchoff (Wentzville) finished 2-over par.

ST. LOUIS WOMEN'S DISTRICT GOLF ASSOCIATION JUNIOR INVITATIONAL

MICDS senior Carolyn Rouse finished her summer in grand fashion by winning the St. Louis Women’s District Golf Association Junior Invitational. The tournament was held at Greenbriar Hills Country Club, which has a par 72. Rouse finished with a 151. Gina Della Camera, a senior at St. Joe’s, was second at 158. Fifty-plus girls competed in the 74th annual event. Past champions include World Golf Hall of Famer Judy Rankin and Liz Uthoff of the Golf Channel’s The Big Break.

  METROPOLITAN AMATEUR

Eli Grant finished what he started at Meadowbrook Country Club. Ignoring tough scoring conditions for the third straight day, Grant fired a 4-over-par 75 to cap a wire-to-wire win as he captured the title at the 20th Metropolitan Amateur Golf Championship. The 34-year-old Grant, who opened with a first round 68, finished with a three-round total of 215, one stroke better than St. Louis players Brian Craig and Jeremy Franklin, who finished at 216. Defending champion Skip Berkmeyer and Kyle Kahlenberg were a shot behind at 217.

  TOURNAMENTS

The Small World Adoption Foundation of Missouri hosts a benefit golf tournament Oct. 11 at Winghaven Country Club. The four person scramble has a 1 p.m. shotgun start. Cost is $150 per player and includes 18 holes of golf with cart, box lunch and drinks on the course, and appetizers after the tournament. (636) 207-9229 or swaf.com.
