• Surf’s Up in Chesterfield Valley! When BRIAN WieHER and his family moved back to St. Louis from the Florida Coast, they couldn’t find the kind of chill-out family eateries they got used to near the beach. That’s why they opened Surf Dogs in Chesterfield Towne Centre. Brian invites families to bring in their vacation pictures for the big bulletin boards like they do in Florida restaurants. The menu features…hot dogs! There are 10 different wild toppings for his Chicago Vienna dogs in poppy seed buns. Weiher is especially excited about his dessert: chocolate-covered Key Lime pie. Painted in classic Bahamas colors and sporting surfboards on the walls, Surf Dogs is open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, except Sunday.

• If you’ve ever met WENDY and PAUL HAMILTON, the logo for their Grand Petite Market will make you grin. That’s because he’s about a foot taller than she (get it, grand/petite?) The wares at the market, set to open in June inside their Vin de Set builidng, will offer wine, non-perishable foods and gifts. Moulin pastry chef Cheryl Herbert will make the candies, truffles and spiced nuts, while Eleven Eleven Mississippi wine director Scott Gaghan will choose the wines, focusing on bottles in the $10 to $12 range. And local artist Grace McCammond is painting a huge mural of wine labels on the market’s wall.

• Behind the brightly colored, shingled exterior of Amigo’s Cantina is a dark, rustic, wood interior. On Cinco de Mayo, I spoke with ROBERTO TREVINO about his newly opened Kirkwood restaurant. He called himself ‘head cook’ and explained that all the recipes are his own (note the menu’s Trevino’s Carnitas and Roberto’s Fajitas). The family-friendly atmosphere, authentic cantina decor with embossed copper lanterns over the booths, and the high spirits of the servers are part of the pleasant package. It’s at 120 Jefferson Ave. (closed Sunday). Note: from 2 to 5 p.m., the staff takes a siesta!

• For a lesson in The Hill 101, consider signing up for OASIS’ Italian Food in St. Louis, taking place Wednesday, June 4. That’s when Joe DeGregorio leads a tour of The Hill with an emphasis on food, history and culture. Starting at 10 a.m. with a ravioli-making demonstration at Mama Toscano’s, the morning outing continues with a private concert at St. Ambrose Church, followed by a walk through the historic neighborhood with Joe to Zia’s for lunch.
