With last summer’s farmers markets a distant memory, it’s comforting to know the arrival of the winter season doesn’t have to mean that we have to go without fresh, locally grown foods on our tables. For those not in the know, St. Louis is home to three monthly winter farmers markets, which feature local producers, as well as offerings that include meat, cheese, baked goods and other specialty products.

The Vine Market @ St. Stephen’s is an indoor extension of the Ferguson Farmers Market and takes place every third Saturday of the month through April 21 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Ferguson.

If you’re a regular at Maplewood’s Wednesday market during the warmer months, then you will recognize many of the same vendors at the Maplewood Farmers Winter Market, which is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Jan. 28, Feb. 25 and March 31 inside Schlafly Bottleworks.

And finally, the St. Louis Community Farmers Market, located at St. John’s Episcopal Church in South St. Louis, includes several vendors who participate at the popular Tower Grove Farmers Market. It occurs the second Saturday of the month, running through April 14, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Other retail options during the winter months include Connie’s Green Grocery in St. Peters, Maude’s Market in South St. Louis and Local Harvest Grocery (also in South St. Louis), where local bounty includes Brussels sprouts, arugula, tomatoes, Swiss chard, spinach, braising mix greens (described as a hardier salad mix), cabbage, sweet potatoes and hard winter squashes, like butternut, acorn, delicata, buttercup and spaghetti squash.

Sprouts, including pea, sunflower and radish sprouts, also are typically available at Local Harvest Grocery during the winter season.
