Blending a bouquet of elements like the finest Meritage, the 40th birthday party honoring LN editor-in-chief Trish Muyco-Tobin had guests toasting, cheering, and quite often becoming weak-kneed at the dessert table. Hosted by the honoree’s mom, Glenda Muyco, at Robust Wine Bar in Webster Groves, the elegant and gracious evening was punctuated by the occasional chorus of “Yes!” as guests watched Mr. Pujols perform his magic on the large TV, thoughtfully located just over the bar. When she was planning the party, Mrs. Muyco says she had no way of knowing the Cardinals would step up to the plate and provide postseason excitement on her daughter’s big night. “I had no idea! Wasn’t that wonderful entertainment?”

The popular wine bar is a favorite of the editor and her husband, Dave Tobin. “We chose Robust because it was right in the neighborhood—and we love our neighborhood!” Muyco-Tobin explains. “And what’s a party without fine wine? Owners Stanley and Arlene Browne always go above and beyond to make sure you leave their place with a big smile on your face!”

The 70-plus guests came from near and far for the festivities, but the distance-traveled prize goes to Muyco-Tobin’s youngest brother, who wasn’t about to let a 4,000-mile flight from Norway keep him from toasting his sister. Muyco- Tobin enjoyed the big turnout. “The thing that I liked best about the party is that, in addition to my family, the guests represented my friendships over the years,” she says. “There were people there from grade school, high school, college, my radio days, friends from LN, as well as brand-spankin’ new friends.”

The evening’s menu included lobster bisque flutes, mini crab cakes, beef tenderloin canapés, assorted flatbreads, artisan cheese and charcuterie platters.

Oh, and about those desserts…inspiring almost as much excitement as Pujols’ three home runs, the dessert table featured red velvet cake from Lubeley’s Bakery, Glenda Muyco’s extraordinary leche flan and a Spanish-inspired cake called sans rival. One guest described it as “worth every single sit-up I’ll have to do for the next two months!” Chocolate lovers weren’t forgotten—the sweet spread also included handmade truffles from Oh Sheila! Chocolates in cinnamon hazelnut, amaretto mocha, lemon lavender and spiced rum.

Every lucky guest agreed—this was the World Series of birthday parties!
