◆ Crushed Red-Urban Bake & Chop Shop, the latest eatery from restaurateur CHRIS LAROCCA, is slated to open in February at 8007 Maryland Ave. in Clayton, the former home of Dick Blick Art Materials. The new restaurant will offer quick lunch options and breakfast and dinner service, as well. Highlights of the new eatery include wood-fired pizza ovens that can turn out a finished pie in 90 seconds, some 40 salad ingredients that will be chopped to order, as well as organic dressings.

◆St. Louis Cupcake, the new brickand- mortar store from baker STEPHANIE CHAPMAN, will be opening soon at 39 S. Old Orchard in Webster Groves. Chapman has made a name for herself creating the Petite Sweets mini cupcakes for Straub’s Markets, a project she plans to continue. Chapman says she’ll have a total of 18 to 20 flavors on the menu.

◆After several months of renovations, Tuscan Tavern & Grill has finally opened at 5800 Southwest Ave., in the old location of Mr. B’s on The Hill.

◆ Schlafly Beer founders Tom Schlafly and Dan Kopman have turned over the majority stake to a group of local investors, but plan to stay on with the company. Speaking of the brewery, on Jan. 25, the Schlafly Tap Room downtown will host its annual Burns Night Celebration from 5 to 11 p.m., featuring Scottish fare, music and Schalfly Scotch Ale to celebrate the birth of poet Robert Burns. Also in brews news, local micro-brewery Six Row Brewing Company has announced it will begin distributing its beers in Kansas City, Mo., Columbia and Jefferson City this month.

◆The Missouri Organic Association‘s annual conference will be held Feb. 2 through Feb. 4 at the Union Station Marriott. The event will feature speakers like natural health expert JORDAN RUBIN, bestselling author JEFFREY SMITH and JEFF MOYER, author and director of farm operations at Rodale Institute, among others, as well as a Seed To Plate organic cooking competition and the Chef To Former Forum, featuring chef TIM GRANDINETTI. ◆SSM Health Care-St. Louis, Curves, Suburban Journals, the YMCA, the American Heart Association, Fleet Feet and Charter recently teamed up to offer the St. Louis Lose to Win Challenge, a program designed to help participants lose pounds and get healthy by providing motivation and accountability. Contestants track their weekly progress via Suburban Journals, and after 12 weeks, the top 10 ‘losers’ win valuable prizes. The kick-off for the next round will be Saturday, Jan. 21, from 9 a.m. until noon, and Sunday, Jan. 22, from 1 to 5 p.m. For more info, go to losetowinstl.com.
