The eighth annual TomatoFest will be held Sunday, Aug. 12, from 2 to 7 p.m. at Iron Barley. The event will feature a variety of tomato dishes, tomato dodge ball, tomato art and other tomato-related contests and activities, as well as a live auction at 6 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public. The eighth annual Downtown Restaurant Week is taking place Aug. 20 to Aug. 26, when 20 of the best downtown eating and drinking establishments will be offering special three-course dinner menus for a fixed price of $25 per person. Venues will be offering wine, cocktail and beer specials, as well. Patrons also will have the option of adding a $5 ‘extra helping’ to their bill to support Operation Food Search. The United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) Heartland Second Annual Wing Ding is scheduled for 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 23, at Greensfelder Arena in Queeny Park. Twenty area restaurants will compete to see who has the best chicken wings, with proceeds to benefit UCP Heartland’s programs and services for children and adults with disabilities and their families. Gelateria Del Leone on South Grand Boulevard is in the process of expanding. The upstairs portion of the building, which used to be an apartment, is undergoing a renovation to add more seating, as well as provide a home for the restaurant’s coffee roasting operation. Look for the additional space to open up sometime in mid-August.
