Around town, neighborhood farmers markets are re-opening and welcoming back local producers for the 2013 growing season—a very exciting time for those of us who enjoy the bounty of our bi-state area!

So look for fresh kales, lettuces, mushrooms, beets, strawberries and asparagus at a market near you…and really, that’s just the beginning. Check out some of the latest news and what not to miss this year beyond the farmers’ harvests.

 

Clayton

Forsyth Boulevard (west of Straub’s)

Saturdays, 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

What's new? Lily Lane Farm with its fresh strawberries, Gusto Gourmet Creamery offering handcrafted gelato with fresh fruit made from recipes from Italy, South Views Kitchens’s Pickle Me Pickles and homemade salsa.

Don't miss: The market’s weekly culinary demonstrations that will include chef Melissa Lee of The Ritz-Carlton, chief chocolatier Dave Owens of Bissinger’s, chef Cassy Vires of Home Wine Kitchen, chef Fabrizio Schenardi of Four Seasons Hotel and Michelle Erhard of Saint Louis University’s culinary school, who will lead a Children’s Cooking Tour where potential future chefs will learn how to make a salad.

 

 

Schlafly’s

7260 Southwest Ave.

Wednesdays, 4-7 p.m.

What's new? Westover Farms offering fresh trout and I Scream Cakes will be serving up ice cream for both two-legged and four-legged customers.

Don't miss: Schlafly’s Session Beer (in cans), including IPA, American Brown and hefeweizen, will be available at Schlafly’s stand. Beginning in July, on the second Wednesday of the month, stay after the market to meet and see a presentation by one of the vendors to learn more about their product and operation.

 

 

Tower Grove

Tower Grove Park, west of the Pool Pavilion

Saturdays, 8 a.m.-noon

What's new? Several new vendors, including LuLu’s Local Eatery’s food truck, EarthDance Farms, Pie Oh My and YellowTree Farm.

Don't miss: Free yoga sessions every Saturday morning (classes in excess of 100 students each week), KDHX’s Harvest Sessions music series, Circus Flora (May 25) and the market’s first Urban Homesteading Fair later this summer.

 

 

Webster Groves

Gazebo Park

Thursdays, 3-6:30 p.m.

What's new? New vendors that include Liberty Farm, Brown’s Garden, Red Fox Baking & Catering, and Native Pops, which offers fresh-fruit popsicles.

Don't miss: Pitch for Produce Day with Fredbird on June 13, along with the kick-off of a new program called the POP Club (Power of Produce), which is designed to empower kids to make healthy food choices while connecting them with the farmers who grow the food they eat.

 

 

Kirkwood

150 E. Argonne Drive

Mondays-Fridays, 9 a.m.-6 p.m.; Saturdays, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sundays, hours vary by vendor

What's new? The Magic House at the Market features hands-on crafts and activities for children (May 25, June 22 and July 27); and Kirkwood Public Library Summer Reading at the Market offers story time, crafts, books for sale by Friends of the Library and more (May 25, June 15, July 13, Aug. 10, Sept. 21 and Oct. 19).

Don't miss: The Peach Festival (July 13) and the Apple Festival (Sept. 7) and Tunes at Ten—live music by local bands, including the Maple Jam Band, Salt of the Earth and The Lulus on select Saturdays through Sept. 21.

 

 

Ferguson

20 S. Florissant Road

Saturdays, 8 a.m.-noon

What's new? Eight new vendors, including Seeds of Hope Farm, Utterback Farms and Mustard Seed Sowers Farm.

Don't miss: Wild Flower Farm Sheep Shearing & Petting (May 25), chef Rex Hale from The Cheshire, Demo & Sample Fest (June 15) and Germanfest (Aug. 17).

 

 

St. Charles Lions Club

300 N. Riverside Drive

Saturdays, 7 a.m.-noon

What's new? On June 8, the market will move to its new home at the Foundry Art Centre parking lot, located at 520 N. Main Center, providing more room to grow.

Don't miss: The market’s large selection of Calhoun County peaches, which should be ripe and ready to go mid-June through August.
