Our fervent wait for homegrown lettuce, asparagus, carrots, leeks, potatoes, beets and mushrooms (should I go on?) on our plates is almost over! With the days numbered, anticipation is growing for the grand re-openings of our area’s farmers markets.

Clayton

8282 Forsyth Blvd. (west of Straub’s)

Opens May 5 Saturdays, 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

An Opening Day Celebration kicks off this market’s 12th season on May 5. The market features Missouri and Illinois farmers and small food entrepreneurs, as well as artisans with their handcrafted items.

Maplewood

7260 Southwest Ave. (Schlafly Bottleworks)

Opens April 4 Wednesdays, 4-7 p.m.

With live music creating a spirited atmosphere, shop various homegrown varieties of fruits, vegetables and herbs, as well as farmfresh eggs, pork, lamb, beef, artisan loaves, flowers, pasta and chocolate—all directly from the producers.

Tower Grove

Tower Grove Park, west of Whitaker Theater

Opens May 5 Saturdays, 8 a.m.-noon

A Kickoff Festival on May 5 opens this market’s 2012 season, which will offer a bounty of local produce, meats, as well as other local products like freshly ground flour and dried teas. And don’t miss the free yoga!

Kirkwood

150 East Argonne Drive

Opens April 6 Mondays-Fridays, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturdays, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Sundays, hours vary by vendor

With its location in the heart of downtown Kirkwood, this market has served as a community gathering place since 1976, as well as a source for local crops and baked goods.

Ferguson

20 S. Florissant Road

Opens May 5 Saturdays, 8 a.m.-noon

A Saturday morning tradition in Ferguson since 2002, this outdoor market resumes May 5 with live music and an array of goods to choose from—like homemade jelly, eggs, nuts, honey, organic meats, bedding plants and soaps.

St. Charles Lions Club

300 N. Riverside Drive

Opens May 19 Saturdays, 6 a.m.-noon

Rise just after the rooster and head to the bank of the Missouri River in Frontier Park for this market’s re-opening on May 19. Peruse stands that offer produce straight from the grower, along with honey, meats and soaps.

Soulard

730 Carroll St.

Open year-round Wednesdays & Thursdays, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Fridays, 7 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturdays, 7 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

Established prior to the Louisiana Purchase, this granddaddy of farmers markets has roots that date back to 1779! With numerous local farmers (including organic), check out an assortment of produce, meats, cheese, flowers and baked goods.
