Pirates of the Caribbean IV: On Stranger Tides: It’s a 6

I don’t know. You just get to the point with these things, where enough is enough. They have even given the green light to a fifth installment. Six Fast and Furious movies? Five Pirates of the Caribbean? They really need some new blood out in Hollywood. The only movies they should make more than three of are James Bond and Pink Panther movies, period.

Captain Jack (Johnny Depp) is back. Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom wisely cried ‘uncle’ after three. Here, they are replaced by Penelope Cruz, as Angelica, apparently the only pirate on the ocean with access to a shower. Together with the fearsome pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane), they are in a three-way race with a vengeful Barbosa (Geoffrey Rush) and the Spanish armada to get to the fountain of youth. Each seeks the fountain for different reasons…Wait, I’m sorry. What was I talking about? I dozed off there for a second.

I don’t know what else to tell you. It’s fine. It’s a cute—if not clever—adventure with more than a few good laughs. In the ‘negatives’ column, it is way too long for what it is, running almost two hours and 20 minutes. For the young ones, it’s a little hard to follow, but for ages 8 to 15, it’s worth a trip to the multiplex.  LN
