OK. If your Oscar checklist is complete, and you are nauseated by the options at the cineplex—as well you should be—there is a silver lining. Not Silver Linings Playbook yet, but you have options. There are some great DVDs that came out this week, so if you want to stay in and hunker down with a good movie, these are my suggestions:

Argo

This Best Picture Oscar winner is an obvious choice. Ben Affleck directs and stars in this funny, suspenseful, intelligent thriller about a group of government agents posing as filmmakers in order to sneak a group of Americans out of Iran during the hostage crisis.

Skyfall

'Best Bond Ever' may be a stretch, but this 23rd installment in the James Bond franchise more than satisfies. Daniel Craig is brilliant as an aging, damaged Bond, and Javier Bardem did not get enough credit for his chilling portrayal of the vengeful Silva.

The Intouchables

Just watch it. It’s the story of the friendship that forms between a handicapped millionaire and his caretaker from the other side of the tracks.

The Master

This film garnered Oscar nominations for both stars: Joaquin Phoenix plays a traumatized World War II veteran looking for direction, and Philip Seymour Hoffman portrays the self-declared guru willing to provide that guidance.

Anna Karenina

Keira Knightley and Jude Law are spot-on in this exceptional adaptation of Tolstoy’s novel.

Flight

Denzel Washington gives an Oscar-nominated performance as a pilot who saves hundreds of passengers in an almost impossible landing. Slowly, his hero status begins to fade as more details about the flight and the pilot surface.

So, those are my recommendations if you’re planning on staying in this week. Basically, just avoid anything starring Gerard Butler or Kristen Stewart, and you should be fine.
