Honestly, I think my head is going to explode. Reviews of this film use words like ‘epic,’ ‘expansive,’ ‘grandiose,’ ‘sweeping’ and ‘spectacle.’ And yes, all those words apply. This movie is a thriller, a romance, a drama, a tragedy, a sci-fi movie, a floor wax and a dessert topping. In many ways, the film is brilliant--maybe it’s too brilliant. But in the midst of all this scope, I found it hard to completely invest.
The film captures what was widely considered to be an unfilmable novel of the same name. There are six interwoven narratives that range from a 19th-century ocean voyage to the distant future. The lead actors, Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent and Hugo Weaving, all play multiple characters--exceptionally, I might add.
The cinematography, direction and score are all a 10. A few distracting make-up glitches aside, the film is visually stunning. This movie will be on every Oscar-contender list. It’s Blade Runner meets Master and Commander meets Howards End meets 17 other movies. It’s epic—we get it. I also have a feeling it’s one of those movies that in a week, I’m going to decide it is about something completely different. So, add thought-provoking to the list of adjectives.
It’s an 8.
