January Movie Preview

'Tis the season…of red carpets and weighty statues. It’s always ‘somebody’s year’ come awards season. I’ve heard people say, It’s Clooney’s year. I’ve also heard people say, It’s Robert Downey Jr.’s year. It certainly is Sandra Bullock’s year. I would give the year to Meryl Streep, but she’s had enough years. With the quality of movies we’ve been enjoying of late, I’d say it’s our year. Here’s what’s coming in January:

January 1

Case 39

This is sort of The Orphan of 2010. Here, Renée Zellweger plays a social worker who rescues a child from parents who want to kill her. She slowly starts to figure out why.

January 8

Crazy on the Outside

Tim Allen and Sigourney Weaver star in the dysfunctional family comedy. Allen plays an ex-convict staying with his sister (Weaver) while trying to save his father’s business and find a long-lost love.

Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe star in this futuristic sci-fi thriller about a vampire-infested Earth where humans are in short supply. The vampires must carefully farm humans or face extinction.

Leap Year

Amy Adams stars in what actually may be a refreshing romantic comedy about a girl who flies to Ireland to propose to her boyfriend on Feb. 29. A series of unfortunate events lands her on the wrong side of the country, and she is forced to rely on a grumpy but gorgeous Irishman to guide her to her destination.

Youth in Revolt

Michael Cera leads an A-list cast in this family comedy about a boy who meets the girl of his dreams on a family vacation and goes to great lengths to be with her.

January 15

The Spy Next Door

Jackie Chan is a spy forced to baby-sit unruly kidsszzzzz…Wait, where was I?

The Book of Eli

This futuristic apocalypse film centers around a lone hero (Denzel Washington) as he travels across the barren earth guarding a sacred book that could save humanity.

January 22

Extraordinary Measures

How Brendan Fraser manages to land the roles he lands I will never know. Here, he plays an executive who, in order to find a cure for his children’s fatal illness, joins forces with a controversial scientist (Harrison Ford).

When God loses faith in mankind, he sends his legion of angels to destroy everyone. I know it sounds absurd but I’m going to withhold judgment…unlike God.

January 29

Edge of Darkness

Mel Gibson plays a jaded homicide detective who discovers a dark world of corporate cover-ups and government fraud while investigating his daughter’s murder.

When in Rome

This film should solidify Kristen Bell as the next Hollywood ‘it’ girl. Here, she plays a disillusioned New Yorker who takes a trip to Rome and inadvertently ignites the passions of three strangers.
