Many of you know that I spend most of my time in print complaining that there are no original ideas in Hollywood, that everything is either a remake or a reboot—not even sure what the difference is—or a sequel or a prequel. Well, here we have something that is completely new and different, I am happy to report. It’s original, it’s compelling, and it’s completely mediocre.

It’s the future: Humans can live forever. In an effort to control population growth, humans are engineered to be time bombs. They age to 25 and then are given one year—that counts down on their forearm—to live. Time is the currency of this brave new world (people can earn time, spend time and even steal it). There also are ‘time zones’ where people from different social arenas are permitted to live.

Will Salas (Justin Timberlake) is stuck in the ghetto, living his version of paycheck to paycheck, ‘hour to hour.’ When a mysterious stranger gives Will more than a century left on his clock, everything changes. Will gains access to a different time zone where people have thousands of hours on their clocks and the world is a very different place. It is there where Will meets Sylvia (Amanda Seyfried), the coddled daughter of a ruthless titan of business, Phillippe Weis (Vincent Kartheiser). Together, Sylvia and Will decide to crash the system and get the struggling time-poor the hours they need. You see, it’s almost like 99 percent of the people don’t have the time they need, and 1 percent have more time than they could ever need or use—time to kill, if you will. It’s subtle, I know, but if you dig deep you will see a veiled social commentary there. Maybe it’s time for JT to go back to the recording studio.

It's a 5.
