Let me start off by saying I don’t think there are many more likeable actors in Hollywood than Emily Blunt and Jason Segel. If any two people can pull off a mediocre romantic comedy, it’s these two. And this really isn’t a mediocre romantic comedy. It’s a terrible romantic comedy and a great romantic comedy rolled into one. If Jason Segel is on anybody’s holiday shopping list, somebody, for the love of God, get him an editor. Foul language, in and of itself, is not funny—well it’s a little funny—but there needs to be a joke there, too.

The title pretty much says it all. Violet (Blunt) and Tom (Segel) get engaged on New Year’s Eve after one blissful year of dating. They plan to live out their perfect lives in beautiful San Francisco, where Violet is hoping to become a psychology grad student at Berkley and Tom’s career as a chef is about to take off. Everything changes when Violet’s graduate studies take the two to the University of Michigan. Just as they predicted, the move causes Tom to be resentful and the relationship begins to unravel. Adding to the problem is Violet’s overly attentive mentor Winton (Rhys Ifans).

It’s hard to get past the premise of the movie. I mean, even the characters agree it’s untenable. Moreover, joking that a situation is implausible doesn’t make it any less implausible. I will say I laughed out loud on more than one occasion, and Segel and Blunt have terrific chemistry. Parks and Rec’s Chris Pratt is hysterical as Tom’s best friend Alex and Community’s Alison Brie is equally funny—as well as unrecognizable—as Violet’s sister Suzie. That being said, someone really needed to get in there and separate the wheat from the chaff.

It's a 6.
