The lists are fairly uncontroversial this year. I said fairly. Also, in the spirit of full disclosure, there are three films on the list that I have not yet seen. I just feel that confident. So, without further ado...

The Best Films of 2012

Les Misérables

I have not yet seen the movie, but it is one of my favorite musicals of all time. They would have to try to ruin this story.

Skyfall

I don’t know if I would go as far as some critics and say, Best Bond ever–but it’s up there.

Argo

Ben Affleck has risen from the ashes and really hit his stride as an actor and director. Here, he plays a government operative attempting to extract Americans in Iran during the hostage crisis.

Hitchcock

Maybe more a film for fans of the director and the genre, but I loved it. It’s a brilliantly acted, interesting story about the making of Psycho.

Arbitrage

Richard Gere stars as a finance mogul who finds himself in a bit of a pickle after he kills his mistress in a car accident and tries to cover it up.

Django Unchained

This is the second film on the list that I have not seen. But between the Oscar power in the cast and Quentin Tarantino, I can’t wait.

Moonrise Kingdom

This is just a charming tale of two children in love. Plus, the cast reads like my ideal dinner party list, so that doesn’t hurt.

The Avengers/The Dark Knight Rises

I have to say I am not a huge super-hero gal, but both these films have complex and compelling stories.

Zero Dark Thirty

Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker) is at it again. Her latest film tells the story of the hunt for Osama Bin Laden.

The Life of Pi

This is a visually stunning and charming film. Even if you read the book, you won’t be disappointed.

And now for the fun part… The Worst Films of 2012

A Thousand Words

There are no words.

The Watch

You have no idea what it took for me to put a Vince Vaughn movie on my worst list.

One for the Money

Katherine Heigl as a New Jersey bounty hunter. Enough said.

Playing for Keeps

Gerard Butler may be easy on the eyes, but he really should start reading the scripts before he commits to a project.

Alex Cross

Well, the studio tried to squeeze one more James Patterson adaptation out and it backfired. Tyler Perry tried to prove he could do more than dress in drag and deliver snarky, comedic dialoguethat, too, backfired.

That’s My Boy

Adam Sandler continues his run of horrible movies. It might be time for an intervention.

Project X/Fun Size

I list them both because they are essentially the same movie: humorless, witless stories of out-of-control teenagers, absent parents and wild parties.

Cloud Atlas

Yes, yes, it’s a complex profound tale of the journey of the soul through time. I just didn’t like it.

What to Expect When You’re Expecting

What not to do when you’re making a movie: Try and base a film on a pregnancy textbook.

Magic Mike

I think we would all be better off if someone says down with Channing Tatum; and also, explain to him using one-syllable words that he cannot act.
