Marshall Cohen was a suburban kid who had attention deficit disorder before it had a name. As an aimless young man, he battled depression and bullying.
Working at his family's drug store in downtown St. Louis, Cohen one day approached a boy who came in from the nearby projects: "I’m opening a gym for kids," Cohen said.
The boy lit up: "Man, I always wanted muscles!"
Thus, Lift For Life Gym was born. For the last 25 years it has given inner-city kids a safe haven from the streets, and the chance to build brighter futures. Currently, the gym serves over 400 youth.
However, Mr. Cohen’s quest continued when he initiated the forming of Lift for Life Academy, which opened in 2000. The Soulard area Academy is the first independent
Charter School established in the City of St. Louis, and now serves students in grades 6-12. Current enrollment is 575. The school’s first classes of seniors, graduated in 2012 and 2013, are now attending either college, technical schools or the military.
