It’s a boy! LN editor-in-chief DOROTHY WEINER and her husband MARC are the proud grandparents of JONAS BRODIE TOBENER, welcomed into the world by ecstatic parents RACHAEL and JOEY on May 29 at a whopping 8lbs., 12 oz.! Jonas and his parents reside in San Francisco.
The SHEARBURN GALLERY has expanded westward! The Central West End gallery has opened a second location in Sante Fe, N.M., and is already being lauded by the Sante Fe Reporter for ‘commitment to quality works by exceptional artists.’
In other culture news, HOTCITY THEATRE is moving its performances from Art Loft Theater on Washington Avenue to KRANZBURG ARTS CENTER in Grand Center. The group will debut in its new space Sept. 19 with a performance of Killing Women.
A friend in need. . .ST. LOUIS HEALTH EQUIPMENT LENDING PROGRAM (St. Louis HELP), an organization that refurbishes medical equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers and hospital beds, is having an equipment drive June 21 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Ladue City Hall and Chesterfield Day School. The donated equipment will be refurbished, sanitized and provided at no cost to seniors in need. For more information, visit www.stlhelp.org.
Thanks to generous grants from THE OLD NEWSBOYS CHILDREN’S CHARITY and EMERGENCY FOOD AND SHELTER PROGRAM, THE HARVEY KORNBLUM JEWISH FOOD PANTRY is able to provide food and other necessities, like stocked school backpacks, to their growing client list. The grants came at just the right time, the food pantry has an increase of more than 55 new families each month. Congrats to VARIETY THE CHILDREN’S CHARITY OF ST. LOUIS, which has been given the William R. Forman Silver Heart Award from Variety International. The prestigious award recognizes the top Variety chapters around the world and includes $10,000 prize money. Fifty chapters from 15 countries were considered for the award, with only the top three receiving a prize.
The MIRIAM SCHOOL in Webster Groves recently received a ‘What’s Right With the Region!’ award from FOCUS St. Louis for creating quality educational opportunities. The school serves 96 children in small, ungraded classrooms that provide an individualized curriculum for each student.
It sure beats the Residence Inn…The CHASE PARK PLAZA has revealed its 51 new executive suites, the result of the hotel’s corporate apartment redesign. It’s the first phase of a major building redesign.
Checkmate! THE CHESS CLUB AND SCHOLASTIC CENTER OF SAINT LOUIS will open its doors to aficionados and novices alike early next month. Its goal is to promote the game by offering materials and mentors to individuals, schools and other groups. The Center will host tournaments and exhibitions, as well as sponsor lectures and classes. It will be located at 4657 Maryland Ave., just east of the intersection of Euclid and Maryland avenues.
Green thumbs...This spring, seniors living at two ST. ANDREW’S RESOURCES FOR SENIORS subsidized apartment communities have the chance to garden at their place of residence with the help of master gardeners through the Silver Gardening program. Each senior will get his or her own plot to tend, where they can plant flowers, vegetables and herbs. The beds are raised off the ground and feature seating areas so the elderly can garden without stress to knees and backs. The group also takes field trips to the Missouri Botanical Garden and Soulard Market. The program is supported by St. Andrew’s Resources for Seniors Friends group.
Local retired dentist DR. MARJORIE WOLTER has been selected as a motivational speaker for GET CONNECTED LIVE 2008, a motivational/networking event June 28 at Union Station. Speakers at the show range in topics from financial fitness, physical and mental prosperity, and keys to business success.
Preserving history...The Missouri Wing of the COMMEMORATIVE AIR FORCE has launched a $2 million ‘Keep ’Em Flying’ campaign designed to maintain its three venerable WWII aircraft as a way to honor the men who flew them and provide a source of history for the general public at air shows around the Midwest. TEE BAUR, CEO of Baur Properties, serves as chair of the campaign, and JACK TAYLOR, founder and chairman emeritus of ENTERPRISE RENT-A-CAR, is honorary chair. Other members of the campaign committee include JACK BIGGS, STEVE BRAUER, STEVEN BUSCH, CURT ENGLER and DON MUSICK. The Missouri Wing is the first of 70 around the nation to undertake such a campaign. For more information, visit www.cafmo.org
The SAINT LOUIS ZOO announced a long-range strategic plan recently that zoo officials said would ‘keep us among the nation’s outstanding zoos’ for years to come. Plans encompass long-range conservation and campus updates, including a new exhibit for grizzly and polar bears, a new exhibit for the California sea lions, and improved habitats for the spectacled bears, Malayan sun bears and Asian elephants.
DR. BRUCE WHITE of ST. LOUIS COSMETIC SURGERY participated in the 54th annual National Security Seminar held at the U.S. Army War College. White was one of more than 160 business, government, academic and community leaders invited to meet and exchange views on defense and security matters.
Kudos to KATHLEEN RUSSELL (Cor Jesu ’08), one of 100 high school students awarded a college scholarship from Toyota. Russell, who will attend Vanderbilt University in the fall, will receive $10,000.
Congratulations to JUSTIN PRITCHARD, who recently received an invitation to join the prestigious Sports Car Club of America Road Racing Drivers Club. Pritchard is a three-time national champion and one of only 12 racers around the country invited to join this year.
