The client walked into Savvy Surrounding Style in Ladue looking to refresh her Creve Coeur bedroom, which she had redone about 10 years ago. Savvy interior designer Kathleen Matthews chatted with the client about her plan for the master bedroom and learned that she wanted a more contemporary space.

“She had black carpet and a big pine armoire,” Matthews recalls. “She knew she didn’t want to keep the carpet.”

Matthews gave her some options and color-palette ideas. The client ended up with something totally different from her original color scheme: all beiges.

“It works so well,” Matthews says. “We went with different textures in the carpet, draperies and headboard. It’s very soft and subtle and includes a lot of elements.”

A challenge of working with all beiges was keeping the space interesting. Matthews and her client didn’t want the room looking bland or boring, but the textures “keep it warm and interesting,” Matthews notes.

The best part of working with the master bedroom and the client inhabiting it was how open she was to new ideas, Matthews adds.

“It’s a whole new look and a very big change,” she says, “but it works so well.”
