A panoramic view of the beach at Trunk Bay in St John

Trunk Bay, St. John

Just a few hours south of Florida lies a set of three islands that are a territory of the United States: the U.S. Virgin Islands. The U.S. purchased the islands during World War I from the Danish government, and they have become popular tourist destinations in the decades since. The smallest of the three is St. John, a 20-square-mile slice of heaven that is 60 percent national park. Unlike its touristy neighbor of St. Thomas, St. John is a pristine getaway for those seeking true escape. Though the islands and much of the rest of the Caribbean were ravaged by Hurricane Irma last year, St. John and its neighbors have rebuilt and restored, and both cruise ships and airlines have returned to them. Visitors to St. John can enjoy local history at its Annaberg Sugar Plantation, snorkel in the crystal-clear waters of Trunk Bay and then grab some local beers at St. John Brewers’ Tap Room Brewpub. Bedeck your abode with décor that reflects this gorgeous island’s low-key vibe.
